Do You Cha-Cha?

by Sage Employee ShariW on 10-13-2008 01:40 PM - last edited on 10-13-2008 01:41 PM

Today’s mobile devices do so much more than make telephone calls, including taking pictures and sending text messages. Now, with ChaCha, you can use your mobile phone to get answers to your burning questions – any time anywhere, and for free!

Here’s how it works. Simply text your question to 242242 (ChaCha), or leave a voice mail at 1-800-224-2424 (2ChaCha). You’ll receive your answer by text message, usually within 5 minutes.

Questions can cover any topic – really! ChaCha forwards your question to one of its certified Guides who will answer your question and sometimes toss in a bit of humor. Here are some recent examples:

Q. What was Dirty Harry’s last name?

A. Dirty Harry Callahan played by Clint Eastwood might be the best anti-hero that cinema has seen. Do you feel lucky punk?

Q. What is Paul Bear Bryant's all time football record?

A. Bryant's record in 38 years at Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Alabama was 323-85-17 (.780). He died 28 days after coaching his last game.

Avid users of this application say they started out with fun trivia questions but quickly started using ChaCha as a resource for all manner of everyday tasks, such as trip planning, comparison shopping or phone number lookup.

How about you? Is this something you’d use your mobile phone for? Or are you a no-nonsense, strictly-for-phone-calls type of user?

Let me know, because there are new, fun devices and applications coming on the market every day. I’d be happy to write about them here, especially if they’ll help you get your work done, faster and easier!

Here's a nice surprise for you -- ChaCha is a free service, no fees or contracts. However your mobile provider may charge for air minutes depending upon your plan. Have you tried it yet? Let me know what you think.

Here's the latest update on this social search tool. Surprisingly, ChaCha is still around (I wrote the original blog in 2008) and one look at their site tells me their biggest source of funding is through advertising.

Interestingly, Google has just gotten in the game with their recent acquisition of Aardvark (http://vark.com/). Keep your eyes on this site in the following months to see where Google takes it.
